Oakville’s New Cycle, Walk Oakville Map, Explore Beautiful Trails and Cycleways During Bike Month

Oakville – June is bike month, and to help you discover the over 185 kilometres of on- and off-road trails throughout Oakville, the town has updated its popular Cycle, Walk Oakville map with new cycling and walking trails, signed cycling routes and bike lanes. The map also identifies swimming pools, splash pads, tennis courts and formal picnic areas. Copies of the map are available at all town facilities, on the Oakville App or online at oakville.ca.

“Council is committed to expanding our path system and supporting convenient, healthy alternatives to help residents and visitors get around Oakville,” Mayor Rob Burton said. “We encourage everyone to get their new Cycle, Walk Oakville map and get outside to discover all that Oakville has to offer during Bike Month.”

The map is just one of many initiatives the town offers as part of its Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) to encourage and support participation in cycling as an alternate mode of transportation.

An updated Cycle, Walk Oakville webpage includes detailed information on cycling in Oakville. The webpage provides cycling safety tips, videos, trail etiquette, Oakville and Ontario cycling laws, and roadway rules.

The town recently released a cycling handbook to help promote and educate residents about cycling in Oakville. It offers bike fundamentals, cycling preparedness, safety tips, and more. Printed versions are available at town facilities or it can be found online.

With support from the Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund, the town offers a variety of CAN-BIKE learn-to-ride programs for adults and children.

Oakville Cycle Camp is a week-long cycling adventure for children aged 8-12 to learn about bicycle safety, maintenance, proper cycling techniques and how to safely tackle roads and trails from a certified CAN-BIKE instructor.

The town has increased the number of bike racks/rings on side streets, and a bike corral has been installed in each of downtown Oakville, Bronte Village, and Kerr Village. The corrals accommodate 10 or 12 bikes in about the same amount of space as a parked car.

All conventional Oakville Transit buses are equipped with a bike rack. Each bike rack can hold two conventional bicycles.

Details on the town’s cycling programs and services can be found on the Cycle, Walk Oakville page.

The ATMP was introduced in 2009 to respond to the need for an improved network of active transportation routes, and ensure the town is a pedestrian- and cycling-friendly community. This year, the town will be initiating the first update to the ATMP to assess current conditions and develop an improved plan to expand the network and support cycling and walking in Oakville. Town staff will conduct a public engagement process to guide the update this summer.
