289-233-0095Oakville – Oakville residents have one more reason to get out and bike as the town prepares to introduce improved bicycle parking in each of the town’s business improvement areas (BIAs) this week.
Bike corrals are being installed in downtown Oakville on Lakeshore Road near George Street; in Bronte Village on Bronte Road near Marine Drive; and in Kerr Village on Kerr Street near Herald Avenue. The corrals accommodate 10 or 12 bikes in about the same amount of space as a parked car, and will be in place this weekend in time for Bike to Work Day which kicks off Bike Month on Monday, May 30, 2016.
“A growing number of residents are turning to cycling as a healthy, green and convenient way to get around town. Bike corrals are one more way Council is working to support a more sustainable, livable Oakville,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “We encourage everyone to come out and cycle to one of the BIAs during Bike Month.”
The corrals are a pilot project of the town’s Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) which was introduced in 2009 to respond to the need for an improved network of active transportation routes. Since its implementation, the town has increased the number of on- and off-road bike lanes to 185 kilometres. As well, additional pathways, signed bike routes, and more than 100 bike racks have been introduced across the town.
“Through the Active Transportation Master Plan, the town is creating an efficient cycling and pedestrian system that links all communities in the town,” said Jill Stephen, senior manager, Transportation. “This summer, we look forward to initiating the first update to the ATMP to assess current conditions, including the effectiveness of the bike corrals, and develop a plan to expand the network and make cycling in Oakville even more convenient.”
